yogaḥ citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ (Yoga Sutra 1.2)
Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind

Yogena cittasya padena vācā
Malam śarīrasya ca vaidyakena.
Yo’pākarottam pravaram munīnām
Patañjalim prāñjalirānato’smi.
Ābāhu puruṣākāram
Śaṅkha cakrāsi dhārinam.
Sahasra śirasam śvetam
Pranamāmi Patañjalim.
Long before yoga became a global path of wellbeing, there lived a sage whose clarity and compassion shaped the very foundations of yogic knowledge — Sage Patanjali. His story, passed down through tradition, is less a biography and more a timeless legend that reveals the depth of his wisdom.
A Divine Birth
According to traditional lore, the great serpent Ananta (Ādiśeṣa) — the cosmic serpent upon whom Lord Vishnu rests — wished to serve humanity in a more direct, meaningful way. He observed the suffering of human beings: minds full of restlessness, confusion, and sorrow. Feeling compassion, he prayed for an opportunity to help.
Ananta descended to Earth in human form, taking birth as Patañjali.
The name itself reflects his arrival:
Thus, Patanjali is the one who fell into the palms of devotion, symbolizing the gift of wisdom offered to humankind.
A Master of Three Great Sciences
Patanjali’s brilliance was not limited to yoga alone. Tradition credits him with three monumental contributions that uplift human life on every level:
1. Yoga – Mastering the Mind
In the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali offered a complete science of inner transformation. In just 195 concise sutras, he mapped the entire journey of the human mind, the causes of suffering, and the path to freedom.
He didn’t just teach practice — he taught clarity, discernment, and liberation.
2. Grammar – Purifying Language
In the field of Sanskrit grammar, Patanjali composed the Mahābhāṣya, a profound commentary on Pāṇini’s grammatical rules. This work preserved linguistic precision and protected the purity of Sanskrit — the language of sacred knowledge.
3. Ayurveda – Nurturing Health
He is also believed to have contributed to Ayurveda, the science of life, helping refine the principles of health, vitality, and balance.
Through these three gifts — Yoga, Grammar, and Ayurveda — Patanjali addressed the human being fully:
body, speech, and mind.
The Yoga Sutras: A Guide for Modern Life
The Yoga Sutras are not a book of postures. They are a roadmap for understanding:
They form the philosophical foundation of my own teaching. Every class — whether alignment-focused, therapeutic, or dynamic — draws from Patanjali’s vision of steadiness, awareness, and transformation.
